Dock Party is finally making it to the blog!! This creative project has been a long time coming and was such a labor of love. Allison Wagner of West Coast Aesthetic and I teamed up yet again to put together a fun summer shoot that would be any girl’s ideal PNW summer day by the lake (with a little bit of Palm Springs style). We teamed up with three stunning Seattle blogger babes to help us bring our concept to life, and these ladies did not disappoint in the least! There were fewer clothes in this project, but our models were still able to bring a trendy, fashionable flair into the images with sunnies, hats, bathing suits, and colorful props.
Our overall idea behind Dock Party was to create a girls day by a lake that showcases various colorful and funky elements for an editorial look and highlights the beauty of Seattle in the summertime. This is basically what Allison and I would love to be doing every day in the summer at our favorite local lake, Green Lake, so we decided to bring that concept to life!
What made this shoot a bit different for me was the lighting. We intentionally wanted to shoot on a bright, sunny day close to midday to get harsher shadows and to allow for the full sun shots. As a Los Angeles and Seattle wedding photographer, this style of photography is not my go-to, especially for weddings. This kind of light creates a very different aesthetic and overall mood than my normal style– which is what we wanted! These creative projects ideally push each of us out of our comfort zone in some way and help us to grow and experiment. I loved the harsh shadow play, the uneven lighting across the models’ faces and bodies, and practicing shooting and editing faces and skin tones in full, direct sunlight. Not to mention, all of those bright colors and killer props were amazing and so different to shoot!
